Elder Day
October 23, 2024
The last two weeks of Wild Wanderers have been full of adventure!
Salmon come back, salmon come back...
How do the salmon find their way back to the rivers and streams of their birth? Maybe they hear the songs of children calling them home, singing of the rivers that feed into the Salish sea: Hamma Hamma, Duckabush, Dosewallips, Quilcene, Dungeness, Gray Wolf, Elwha, Fraser, Nooksack, Skagit, Stillaguamish, Snohomish, Duwamish, Puyallup, Nisqually, Skokomish. Maybe they feel the laughter and glee as children play the salmon game, mimicking the life of a salmon...what part did your child play in the game? Can they name any of the rivers that flow into the Salish sea?
We had several elders join us last week and stories were shared around a campfire. The "youngers" guided everyone to some of their favorite places and were incredibly attentive to including our visitors carefully along the trails. We ended our time with the elders with tea, smiles, and appreciation for each other. The afternoon was spent creating a play, making jewelry from madrone berries, practicing knife skills and carving, and eating plenty of huckleberries.
We look forward to what this week will bring!
