It Starts With a Spark
November 1, 2024
It was a wet Wednesday, so we had a fire going for our morning circle. We shared a story about the Rainbow Crow and how they brought fire to humans. Through selfless actions, the crow's color and voice were transformed. Do you think there is any hint of rainbow iridescence left in crow feathers?
We demonstrated the bow drill technique and managed to turn a coal into flame, sparking interest in this fire-making method and further fire studies.
Later, we acted out different animal roles in predator-prey scenarios and played a game called Predator-Prey, where each of us chose a person to be our prey and a person to be our predator—without telling them. What animals did your kiddos act out? How did it feel to play both roles at once?
After getting thoroughly soaked in the rain, we returned to the fire to dry off and have lunch. Some of us worked on carving skills and projects, created rivers and ponds from the rain, and shared stories by the fire. Despite the wet and cold, we kept our spirits warm with the fire and our inspired choices throughout the day.
